Egham, UK, 26 September — Gartner Executive programs (EXP), a unit of Gartner, Inc., today announced its first CIO Academy in Europe taking place in Egham, UK, from 14-17 October 2003. Gartner said CIOs face relentless pressure to keep costs down whilst being asked to both innovate faster and manage business risk better. The Gartner CIO Academy is designed to help CIOs further build their credibility in the business, lead their organisations to new heights, maximise their effectiveness and minimise uncertainties.

The Gartner CIO Academy curriculum is highly focused and designed explicitly for the CIO participants. It delivers three days of intensive, senior-level professional development and personal diagnostics with fellow CIOs and leading Gartner analysts. Each individual will leave with a customised 90-day action plan for achieving his or her goals.

"What is important right now is helping CIOs learn how to increase further their credibility within the business, how to set the right agenda for their organisation and ensure that their agenda maps to the strategic goals of the business, while being flexible enough to accommodate unforeseen changes," said Nick Kirkland, group vice-president and head of Gartner EXP.

To be successful today CIOs must deliver on six key imperatives according to Gartner:

Lead: Identify your value proposition
Anticipate: Sense key trends
Strategise: Shape and synchronise supply pressures (Suppliers and Customers) and demand pressures (Business, Executive and IS Group)
Organise: Create a lean organisation capable of managing the supply chain between service providers and business units
Deliver: Provide cost-effective and timely services
Measure: Know where you stand and why

Leadership is the first imperative that CIOs must master. It enables them to bridge the gap between business and technology in their organisations. "Leadership will build and sustain their personal credibility as well as that of the CIO position. This is vital to the success of a versatile CIO," said Nick Kirkland.
